When hand-cutting joinery, precise joints like tenons don't always fit quite right on the first pass. A shoulder plane is often the preferred solution. This tool is a narrow woodworking plane where, unlike a block plane, the blade extends across the entire sole so that you can trim right up into the corner of the tenon's cheek and shoulder. A shoulder plane can shave very thin bits (to a few thousands of an inch) off of ill-fitting tenons to achieve the perfect fit required for strong and lasting joints. The 3-in-1 label on this plane is appropriate because you can remove the long nose of the plane for it to function as a ''Chisel Plane.''
